The reason you don’t pray is not because of a lack of time. You are not nearly as busy as you think you are. You just waste time on things that don’t matter.
The reason you don’t pray is not because of a lack of knowledge. You know the right theology and can quote the right verses. You’ve read books on prayer and even taught others about it.
The reason you don’t pray is not because of a lack of experience. You have prayed and witnessed God answer you. You have prayed in the lowest lows and highest highs. You have prayed for others, with others, and in front of others.
The reason you don’t pray is not because of a lack of need. Your prayer list is endless. You have sins to confess, praises to sing, and requests to make. You have burdens that cannot be taken anywhere else but to the throne of God.
The reason you don’t pray is not because of a lack of grace. The way to your Father is open, cleared by the Way Himself, Jesus Christ. His death has given you a seat at the table and a place in the family. If God did not hold back His own Son, don’t you think He will give you what you need?
The reason you don’t pray is not because of a lack of words. You talk and write about your problems to lots of people. Anxiety forces you to rehearse them in your head. And even when you don’t know what to pray, the Holy Spirit is there to speak for you.
Let’s be honest. The real reason you don’t pray is because of a lack of humility. Bottom line, you don’t pray because you don’t think you need to. You’re good. You’ve got it. Everything is fine.
You don’t need another book or sermon or strategy or piece of advice or helpful tip on prayer. You need a changed heart. You need to repent of your pride. You need to see how desperate, needy, and starved you are apart from daily time with your Father.
You may want to pray and even like to pray, but you will never be a man of prayer until you understand that you need to pray. Prayer will become as natural as breathing when it becomes as necessary as breathing.
So if you want to pray, humble yourself. And if you want to humble yourself, pray. I know it sounds strange, but it’s true:
The cure for prayerlessness is prayer.
Praying with you,
Your New Self
